John Law’s Book Release Party at City Lights Bookstore

johnlaw

John Law has been a friend of mine for so many years I forget when we met. He’ s the guy that shows up and works. He’s an instigator of the best kind and keeps us all on our toes. Please make time to hear this wonderful man rant about what things used to be like and how soon life as we know it will come to an end.

The Space Between is a collection of three stories inspired by the author’s lifelong obsession with bridges. An avid urban adventurer and bridge historian, the author shares his passion for these engineering marvels while delving into their potential to fuel our dreams, fears, and nightmares. Part dreamscapes, part adventure tales, these narratives take the reader on an exploration of bridges to inspire their contemplation on a structural as well as metaphysical level.

Who would have thought he’d do it again (thanks Snook!) and would have thought it would be better! That was one of the best parties I’ve been too. Music was way too loud and they need a lot more junk to take out the empty tin sound of the place, but otherwise I had a great time. Us old guys are hard to please and I was.

Cheri “Rat Girl” Needs Help!

Cheri is in Turkey in need of surgery and needs our help! The operation is only $2000, which is a lot of money there, but very little for us rich American friends!

Danny Girl has set up a pay pal account below. It should only take:

  1. 15 of us who really care @ $100 each
  2. 20 who care, but are too poor @ $20 each
  3. 20 who will give up a fancy beer @ $4 each
  4. 20 who only have pocket change @ $1 each
  5. The rest of you can pay for the flowers.

You are here to help our mutual friend Cheri “RatGirl” ! Thanks for coming! We all love her for different reasons, some for her creativity, some for her warped sense of humor, some for her sense of adventure, and some of us don’t even know why we love her but we just do! please use the paypal button to donate or email Dannygirl at dannygirlish@hotmail.com if pay-pal is inconvenient. Thanks again, you all rule. –D.G.

Update

When Cheri went in for her Biopsy it came to the attention of her Surgeons that her Appendix was perforated, and they rushed her into surgery. They removed her appendix, as well as the tumors and Ovarian cyst. Her infection was one of the worst that the surgeons had ever seen, so that is what Cheri is dealing with now. She came home Monday, and is getting lots of rest and injectable antiBiodics and Iron. She is very weak and tired, but very greatful to all of her friends. If we hadn’t raised the money for her, she may not have gone in for the biopsy when she did, and may not have found the infection until too late. so far we have raised $3,500! I think we should keep raising until Cheri is completely in the clear. The amount we have received so far will cover her current expenses, but she is likely to have more medical bills later, not to mention rent money while she is unable to work. Thanks again to all those who care and all those who donated. Love to you all, Dg

Paul ‘da Plumber’ Benefit Party this Sat.

Paul is an amazing bike artist. Here is a Make show featuring some of the great work he’s done over the years. This will be a fun party and a great way to help out one of our own!

WHAT: Cyclecide is throwing a benefit party for Paul to help with medical bills.
Bingo, houses made of meat wrecked by dogs in godzilla suits, ‘flu shots’, bean bag toss, we’ll have it all. No cover but donations at door and for beer and silly entertainment will be accepted.

WHEN: Saturday January 31st starting at 7pm and going until 11pm.

WHERE: 984 Folsom St, Second Floor — the MonkeyBrains office space.

WHY: Paul ‘da Plumber’ had major surgery on his right wrist, has it in traction, and will be out of work and unable to use it for several months. Paul — as you probably know — builds amazing bike powered rides and sculptures, and all sorts of silly devices.

YOUR MONEY: You can send donations to cash@paulsrides.com via paypal.

One inch of the ulna was removed, ground up and packed into the small bones in the back of the hand to reinforce the hand. A permanent metal sheathe was put into the wrist about the size of a butter knife and attached to the bones of hands and wrist with 7 surprising large full size bolts. They did a bunch of other things to his wrist that will hopefully minimize the constant pain he has experienced for years. Post Op photos:

Homemade Butter

My daughter Zolie and I thought it would be fun to make butter to go with Mom’s pancakes. My local homeless friend Hank found this great Daisy Churn #4 for me a few weeks back. With the leftover cream from the birthday pies we made last week and a copy of Joy of Cooking from 1964 we got to work. Right away we knew we were in for the long haul when we read “how much slower the process was in threatening or stormy weather”. We looked outside and saw it was still raining. We worked the handle on top of the table, then on the floor and finally we moved out to the living room to catch a movie while we finished. Finally we had what looked like butter. After removing it from the churn and washing with cold water we had to decide what kind of salt to add. We split it up and added French British Maldon sea salt to half and Korean parched salt to the other. The whole time we made it Zolie kept telling me to go slower dad. How she knew that I have no idea. I kept asking her where she lived last and who she was. Old souls make great butter even in the rain!

It’s thicker now and she had to move it to the floor for better leverage.

Home made butter on Kyrsten’s buckwheat pancakes!

Update

The butter tastes great and the little bit of Buttermilk left in pockets of the butter makes it moist on toast.

Buttermilk will get used this Sat. for more Pancakes and fresh butter!

Here is how you can make at home

Tomato Trellis and Family

Zolie amazing Karydis with her Tomato crop

When I was Zolie’s age now my dad put in his first garden at our house in Boise Idaho. Tomatoes have always been grown in our Basque family and we have taken pride in them for generations. I remember us taking first place in the Idaho State fair in the mid 70’s for the biggest tomato! We were just shy of a world record! I recall it taking several jars for mom to can and it was as big as my sisters and I head. Over the years my dad worked out a system of supports for the huge plants we would grow that I still use today in the garden with Zolie. Well now he has improved it and he sent me his updated system and photos of the results (see link below)!

Escape From the Shipyard!

We had a wonderful time! Great food, creative backyard science and the Crew from Alabama!

Dinner was great, and Rich stopped by with the new signs for the car. Kyrsten did a great job designing them.

Look close, there is a ghost on board.

Trace Mounds at Blackrock

1970 Blackrock Desert

A good friend of mine Christopher Brooks responded to my questions about the trace mounds we saw this year at Burning Man from the previous year’s event.

Here is the research he did along with a bit of history of the Blackrock desert.

The pictures he shows of the early years remind me of my first trip to Blackrock. I brought out my Vespa with 10″ tires and was able to drive at 50mph with my eyes closed and no hands! It was not a reckless move back then, just flat and hard.

Mutoid Waste Co. in Petaluma

One of my favorite Art Cars at BM was the Rustang Sally & Franken Wagon made by the group Mutoid Waste Co.

Zolie and I got to hang out with them in their temporary state side shop in Petaluma (thanks to their friend Scotty). These are people I instantly knew were family and we hope to see them return again.

Cupcake Reality

We filmed a reality show about muffins and cupcakes this weekend in Berkeley for Canadian Discovery Channel. Kyrsten and I filled in for Keith and Merrilee who were out of town. We had a great time racing around the park. The crew was fun to work with and we got to talk to some very knowledgeable electric tech heads (Keith needs help with his new pumpkin carriage). Keith, call us about what you need to fix on them. Now I have to build an electric steam ball trike!
