Pill Bug art car coming soon!

I’m looking for a ATV quad to make into a art car in the shape of a pill bug.

The snail needs company at BM this year and I think this would be a fun simple project for this years event.

The rear end will be a fire pit to gather around when things get cold. Sadles on top with a bit of Oilpunk details thrown in.

Let me know if you have a lead on an ATV in the bayarea.

My newest creation are steel logs and hand forged andiron that use natural gas for fuel. The colors of flame thoughout the fire are wonderful. This is my modern take on the ceramic log. I can build this as a match light system, or add a fully automated remote system with safeties.  I use ANSI certified fire pans and safety valves. These logs could also be used in one of my outdoor fire pits as well.

LED Sheep Art

Coming from a long line of  Basque sheep herders, and being an artist I had to post this one.

How many pints of beer did they drink to come up with this?!

We took to the hills of Wales armed to the teeth with sheep, LEDs and a camera, to create a huge amazing LED display. Of sorts. For more info search for samsung LED TV or visit samsung.com/LED

Tony Sarg’s Sea Serpent in Nantucket 1937

This looks like it was made today for some big budget festival in the desert. If he were around today I’d camp with him. We need a new hoax! “giant snail attacks maybe? Glad to see the cacophony society was going strong way before we were here!

In the summer of 1937, Tony Sarg and several others promoted a hoax in Nantucket.

Sightings of a sea serpent were advertised… footprints were found… stories published…

Then, the serpent appeared on South Beach (now Washington Extension – not where it was intended to land!): it was one of Sarg’s Macy’s Day Parade balloons.

Tony Sarg (1880-1942) was an American puppeteer, illustrator, designer and painter. He is famous for creating balloons for the Macy department store parades and many illustrations for magazines. He owned a store in Nantucket, the Tony Sarg’s Curiosity Shop.

All of Nantucket must have visited. There are photos of this “sea-serpent” from many scrapbooks of the era.

ETech 2009

Great day (thanks Dale and the Make crew). I don’t get out in the real world much and I always love learning new things at these events. From afar I don’t think I have anything in common with the tech world but I always find common ideas and go home wanting more. Here’s what I walked away with:

  1. 1 gal of gas equals 1000 man hours of labor. Try rototilling your garden by hand sometime and you will know this to be true. I love the smell of gas and fresh turned soil.
  2. A chicken needs 200 calories a day and provides 96 calories/ egg. Not bad if most of that can come from your yard and food scraps. Auto chicken door needs refinement (another project).
  3. You can grow food using LEDs. Not sure why I would do this as I live in sunny CA and the sun has been working just fine, but now I know. more
  4. Educating my kid to change her habitual electrical use, and to remind me to do the same will probably work better than another gadget I never look at after the 1st week. I’m thinking an incentive program where youths turn in their parents for wasting resources!
  5. We are all to overwhelmed by information and each other to enjoy life. One of the reasons the events I host have been so popular. We show people things, then give them space to talk about it and to possibly participate if interested. Going to incorporate that into this blog with more how too post.
  6. Glad to see the people at Adobe are thinking about the impact packaging makes on the environment and front end solutions to aid designers in making educated environmental decisions.
  7. Robots won’t replace Zolie (my daughter) anytime soon.
