I found this gem at the CBA smithing conference this weekend! Was left outside for a few years, but looks to be in working order. I found a few articles about it, but could use some more insight before we fire it up. Hoping to have it ready for the May Day Party this weekend!
Settings on the Hogan High frequency apparatus made by McIntosh Electrical Corporation include: Tesla coil, d’Arsonval Solenoid, and Oudin resonator.
Steam Locomotive No. 844 is the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific Railroad. It was delivered in 1944. A high-speed passenger engine, it pulled such widely known trains as the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose and Challenger.
Many people know the engine as the No. 8444, since an extra ‘4’ was added to its number in 1962 to distinguish it from a diesel numbered in the 800 series. The steam engine regained its rightful number in June 1989, after the diesel was retired.
When diesels took over all of the passenger train duties, No. 844 was placed in freight service in Nebraska between 1957 and 1959. It was saved from being scrapped in 1960 and held for special service.
The engine has run hundreds of thousands of miles as Union Pacific’s ambassador of goodwill. It has made appearances at Expo ’74 in Spokane, the 1981 opening of the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, the 1984 World’s Fair in New Orleans and the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Los Angeles Union Station in 1989.
Hailed as Union Pacific’s “Living Legend,” the engine is widely known among railroad enthusiasts for its excursion runs, especially over Union Pacific’s fabled crossing of Sherman Hill between Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyoming.
For more information on steam locomotives, as well as No. 844, take a look at our Historical UP Locomotives section.
If UP 844 is traveling, information will be posted on the Steam Schedule page. Excursion information is updated annually in April.

The CBA is a wonderful organization that shares the tradition of blacksmithing. It’s not often we get to have it so close to the Bay Area. If you have interest in starting, or want to learn more this is the event for you. This group will share everything they know and teaching stations will be setup everyday of the event.
I will be there with the Snail Art Car the Golden Mean
I first saw this show in 1996 in the middle of the desert and wondered who these people were. Over the years I’ve acquired many fond memories of Chicken John’s shows and manage to participate in a few myself. This is the 17th Lost Vegas show at CellSpace and I can guarantee you will have fun!
We make boats out of junk and have amazing adventures. Lost Vegas this year is a benifit to send junk boats to the Bienalle in Venice, Italy.
Lost Vegas is a dysfunctional casino environment with actual games and live entertainment. It’s got all the stuff the real Vegas has, only it’s right here… but only on Saturday April 11th. You get chips, to gamble on the games. There’s a wedding chapel with rings, for short duration marriages. Tango band. Trapeze arielist. The Secret Room where they will be filming the movie “The Sexy” starring the Wink and Yoni show, a washed up Hawaiian lounge band. There is also a photo studio where you can gets you photo taken on a bearskin rug in front of a fire. A Devo cover band that plays lounge versions of all the hits. The Cheese Puffs, Sparkle Motion, The Naked Fire Babes, Freaktronic… the list goes on and on …
The games this year:
The wheel of SMUT
Quantum Dating Game
Poke-her
Human Wheel of Death
Cockroach Racing
Rat Roulette
Crap
Short duration marriages
Showgirls
Live music
Boy rental
All gambling is real. You play with chips, that you cash out for valuable prizes. Ahem. This is less spectacle and more action-oriented. You place the bets! You race the roaches! You spill your drink! It’s all about you!!!!
Our headlining performer Otto Von Danger will jump the Ramp of Death (again). Inside CELL SPACE, Otto will jump on a real motorcycle over the Ramp Of Death over 20 NAKED CHICKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW!!!!
Mark Growden added to the bill!!!!!
Dress to the 9’s, and please support the boat project.

I love my crazy friends, so let me introduce more of them to you; presenting the Seabat Family. We are looking forward to seeing them at Maker Faire this May.
The Seabat family is an eclectic crew of creative individuals. They enjoy their privacy and freedom, and therefore choose a life of fluid locality. Though their real home is the magnificently mobile Seabat Isle, they each travel the world and beyond in a variety of vessels. Seabat Isle is a quaint little plot held together by the massive roots of Unwin, the islands magnolia tree, floating hither and thither across the many seas.
