Geek Dad- Wired talks about the Boiler Bar

Geekdad an article from Wired about the Boiler Bar

I love the idea of a flame shooting bar in everyone’s backyard!

This video was shot by Geeks are Sexy at Austin Maker Fair at Kyrsten’s 40th Birthday party (that why we have the silly hats on)

I mention Oilpunk in this video to explain our aesthetics. I’ve been asked a few times what I mean by this, so I put together a short paragraph to explain how I see our look and the influence to our work.

Oilpunk: is Punk, Hot Rod, Geek, Blue Collar, and Maker Culture mixed together with the Petroleum Golden Age of the last century. It’s the intersection of petroleum products, art, and science. It harkens back to a time when hard work, combustion engines and industry shaped us, yet it speaks to the future. It’s taking the castoffs of modern industrial culture and objects from the last decade to reuse today. Dirty, greasy, sweaty, it’s a work hard, play hard style.

Flaming Lotus Girls this weekend

Flaming Lotus Girls

Well I’ve done my part by bending back the damage done to her at Robodock, now it’s time to get her out for the rest of you to see again! This wonderful sculpture will be in one place this weekend for 2 different events! Sad to say there will be no fire.

On Friday March 6th, the Serpent commands the floor at an all-night party hosted by Opulent Temple and featuring the world-famous DJ Carl Cox. That’s just the start.

5 rooms of music, The Deep End, the Hookahdome, Pete Hudson’t Homourborous, Art Cars, visual installations, fire dancing, and more .
Get discounted pre-sales here: www.opulenttemple.org

On Saturday March 7th, the Serpent will light up the Bay in an art opening gala reception from 7.00PM-midnight.

There has never been a sculpture like the Serpent Mother. . The warmth of her embrace and her coiling design create an atmospheric space in which over a thousand people can stand. Her 168’ long stainless steel spine coils around the massive space, while her 20’ long neck and head tower over her audience. The audience takes control, however, by directing her movement, raising her hydraulically- actuated neck and opening her fanged mouth. Full audience participation makes each installation a singular experience – come make it happen.

This magnificent installation of a 168′ skeletal stainless steel snake will be on display Saturday March 7th, on Treasure Island. We will open the Serpent for a gallery opening from 7 pm until midnight. We hope you will join us for this fun and free event.

Post Valentines Day Show

Hot Love

img_0001_1

Someone drew this Valentines heart in the sand of one of my Fire Gardens.

I had a wonderful time eating great food, talking and watching wonderful fire and light art. I’m always so inspired by the things I see my friends make. Shows like this remind me why I live in the Bay Area.

Power Tool Drag Races this Weekend

This is the best white trash event I have ever been to! What more can you ask for, beer, girls, grease, greasy girls, racing, sun burns, and every DIY engineer freak the bay area has to offer. I will be out there with the Big Wheel Racer beating the greasy socks off of everyone again and taking home the prize money to feed my family for another year!

CAMINO Restaurant opening in Oakland

More Lighting By Jon Sarriugarte

I made ceiling light fixtures, fire tools, cook grills and wall sconces for Alison and Russel several months ago and I got a chance to see some of it installed today.

Their new place is on the upper stretch of Grand Avenue in Oakland, Chez Panisse Cafe veteran chef and produce buyer Russell Moore has taken over the former Country Home Furniture store to open Camino (3917 Grand Ave.) which should open in the next few weeks. Camino’s cooking will be all about the fireplace — a huge, waist-high stone one that Moore plans to use for rustic dishes like lamb a la ficelle, baked fish and lots of stuff cooked in cazuelas, with pots of beans bubbling in the coals. It feels alot like the Basque boarding house eatery’s I grew up in with the long family style tables and open hearth kitchen. Allison Hopelain, Moore’s partner in life and Camino, will be general manager. In addition to her own small gardening business, Hopelain has worked at Quince, Bar Tartine and Zuni.

Update:

We have decided for safety reasons to cancel our participation in this event. There is just not enough room for fire. Please come by, the robots look amazing!

Several different artists from around the Bay Area and Europe will be presenting their work for your imbibing pleasure.

This Saturday the first US Robexotica exhibition is opening at Space, 354 5th St. San Francisco.

The Austrian cocktail robots that came to the Bay Area for Maker Faire will be joined by several local creations, ones that have been to Vienna for Roboexotica before, and some that haven’t.
