Art Car Royal Can-you for sale

playa-sailing-2

Fellow builder Greg Barron from Rideable Bicycle Replicas is getting ready to build a half scale size Frigate or Brigantine, a fully functional square rigged sailing vessel for next year and needs to clear out his present creation to make room and raise some money.  Greg  wanted to see if  he could make an art car sail since the La Contessa didn’t, nice concept but no functionality as a sailing vessel. It irritated him. The canoe concept was pretty basic and easy and it does sail under wind power alone, quite well in fact. The Can-you hit 16 mph this year up at the BR Yacht Club in a stiff breeze. New speed record and 9 people on deck too. Go sail a reach in silence and then bring it about, fire up the engine and motor back upwind. Repeat. Plus it’s nice to take  on a sunset sail. Can’t wait to see his new vessel and take a ride.

Who would have thought he’d do it again (thanks Snook!) and would have thought it would be better! That was one of the best parties I’ve been too. Music was way too loud and they need a lot more junk to take out the empty tin sound of the place, but otherwise I had a great time. Us old guys are hard to please and I was.

Hand Forged Lighting fixture

Back to Custom Lighting

dsc_0048

We just finished and installed this wonderful hand forged light fixture in a private home. It looked great installed and really completes the already great patio area. These blacksmith light fixtures are hand made in our shop by Hino and I. I start with the client’s napkin drawing, photo, or drawing of what they’re after, offer them different textures, then make a site visit to get the scale and feel of the room so the fixture will work with it.

We have been doing a lot of custom metal ceiling light fixtures for homes lately.  I will start posting pictures as I get them photographed.

Homemade Fig Jam

The rains a few weeks ago came at just the right time for our last fig crop of the year making them nice and plump. Conveniently the biggest branch, well out of reach and covered with figs, snapped in the rain giving us figs galore right at our feet! Zolie and I picked them and cut firewood Sunday and started making Jam early Monday morning. After getting things started, Zolie got Kyrsten up to speed so I could get to work. While I was gone the two of them reduced the mix down to very nice jam, canned it and even made beautiful labels. We tried out the new fig jam this morning on pancakes with the homemade butter we made a few weeks back. Yum! Apple butter is next!

Zolie’s Fig Jam

Boiling water (enough to cover figs completely)
4 qts fresh figs (8 cups crushed)
2 cups Sugar
3 cups water
8 slices lemon
Pour boiling water over figs; let stand 15 minutes. Drain and thoroughly rinse in cold water. Pat dry; remove stems. Crush and measure figs; place in large heavy pot. Add 1/4 cup sugar for each cup of crushed figs. Add 3 cups water. Bring to a rapid boil; reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, 3 hours or until thickened, stirring occasionally.Ladle hot jam into hot sterilized jars, leaving 1/4-inch headspace; add a slice of lemon to each jar. Cover at once with metal lids and screw on bands finger tight. Process in a boiling-water bath for 10 minutes. Yield: 8, 1/2 pints.

Burning Man and the Golden Mean

Well we are finally here. The Snail is a BIG hit and everyone loves it. Our DMV shifts helping people register their cars went so smooth and visiting with people there is one of the highlights of my trip. The dust is bad, but one of the best nights was riding around with Kyrsten and Merrilee on bikes and running into wonderful snapshots of playa life that faded away with the next brown out and rain. Everyone out seems happy and ghost like alive in their dusty best.

The Girls loved the snail. Merrilee has story time in it each afternoon.

Form & Reform at the Acre Show!

This show looks so good that I’ve decided to break my promise to never do another trade show.  The Acre show is April 26-28 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
I’m really excited to see all my old wholesale customers and meet new ones!

One of the many things I do is run a furniture company called Form & Reform. I started it in 1987 after I moved out here from Idaho. I had experience in metal work from high school and learned blacksmithing though the California Blacksmith Association. I’ve really enjoyed all the years of running this business and the experience it has brought. I now can’t help myself to make a smooth to the touch edge on everything I make even if I know no one will ever touch it.
